Rock Climbing
Just 90 miles to the north of New York
City, U.S.A., lies the Shawangunk Mountains. The mountains, known as the
'Gunks', are 12 miles long and 300 feet high. The extreme sport of rock
climbing is a very popular activity there. Many people from around the region
and abroad make trips to the Gunks to climb the mountains. The Gunks have become
one of the major rock
climbing areas of North America. There are about 1,200 climbing routes, and
visitors to the Gunks get to enjoy wonderful views.
However, most rock climbers are not so
interested in the views. Like mountain climbers, they go up the sides of
mountains. But the rock climbers seem to want the climb to be especially
difficult. They choose to climb only the parts that look like walls. They also
pick only areas where there is a danger of falling thousands of feet to the
ground. In addition to strong legs, rock climbers need a lot of strength in
their arms and hands. They must use small openings in the rock to hold
themselves flat against the wall. It
is definitely not a relaxing sport!
